After the World Cup loss in the final against India, Kumar Sangakkara is going to step down as Sri Lankan cricket captain. Sangakkara was the third highest run-scorer in the tournament with 465 runs to his name.
He said he felt it was time someone else took over as the captain of the Lankan cricket team after its defeat in last week’s World Cup final against India. Ruling out his retirement from the game, however, Sangakkara said, “I will continue to play for another two-three years.”
He said that he offered to stay on as Test captain. According to sources, Angelo Mathews and T Dilshan are frontrunners for taking over from Sangakkara.
Sangakkara took over the captaincy in 2007 after the then skipper Mahela Jayawardene left the post following loss to Australia in the World Cup finals.
Under his astute leadership, Sri Lanka played superb cricket in the recently concluded World Cup, taking his team to the finals and almost winning the game.
Sangakkara will captain the Deccan Chargers team of the Indian Premier League in its fourth edition starting from April 8.
