India VS Australia Warm-Up Match Photos

A four-wicket haul from spinner Piyush Chawla sparked an Australian batting collapse as India won their World Cup warm-up match by 38 runs on Sunday.Chasing a modest 215 for victory, Australia had a flying start and were cruising at 118 for one with captain Ricky Ponting (57) well set, before the Indian spinners ran through the middle order. Leg-spinner Chawla, a surprise inclusion in India’s World Cup squad, and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh took seven wickets between them to bowl out Australia for 176.

Kapil Dev Criticised The BCCI For Eden Gardens

Captain of Indian World Cup winning team Kapil Dev on Sunday criticised the BCCI for Eden Gardens not being able to host World Cup matches involving India.

"It is also responsibility of BCCI to see that CAB completes the renovation work of the stadium in time," Dev said while participating in a cricket chat show here.

"I am not supporting CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya nor BCCI. Everybody should have come together to host a match at Eden," he said.

Stating that adding "personal agenda" should not have come in arranging such matches, he asked: "Why for Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya, people of West Bengal will be deprived to see India in action at Eden Gardens in this World Cup?"

A stadium in Mumbai, where no match has been played earlier, has been allotted a match this time, but the match scheduled to be held in Kolkata, known for its love for cricket, has been taken away, Dev lamented.

"I also feel sorry for the people here," he said at a chat show in which three other former captains of World Cup -- Vivian Richards, Steve Waugh, and Sourav Ganguly -- were present.

Former Aussie skipper Steve Waugh said the Australians have a very good memory of Eden where they won the World Cup beating England in 1987.

About pressure to be faced by the Indian team for playing before the home crowd, Dev said, "Pressure will be there. But you have to take it in your stride as you have the crowd and the pitch in your favour."

On the dependence of the Indian team on Sachin Tendulkar, he said, "I don’t like to depend on one player. Cricket is a team game."

Praising Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he said Dhoni was able keep his cool under pressure.

Former West Indies great Richards said fielding would be going the deciding factor this time.

He said Indian batting has been improved quite a lot under coach Gary Kirsten.

According to the present format, all the rated teams should reach the quarterfinals, said Sourav Ganguly.

Shoaib Akhtar To Look Forward To The Upcoming World Cup

Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has lot of reasons to look forward to the upcoming World Cup, having missed the previous edition due to a doping ban, and one of them is the possibility of a duel with Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar.

"We all know he is a great player. Every bowler gets hit. Even Brett Lee gets hit a long way, so I am not worried about being hit for sixes by Tendulkar. I have got him off the first ball too," Akhtar told reporters.

"Not only Sachin, we will try to get other key players early because they can single-handedly win matches. Put them under pressure, and get them out early - that’s what I will like to do," he added.

India and Pakistan are placed in different groups for the event, starting February 19. The top-four from each group would advance to the quarterfinals and it is only from here on that the possibility of an Indo-Pak clash arises if the two teams move ahead from their respective pools.

Speaking of Pakistan’s chances, Akhtar said the team has to win the megaevent to reclaim the fan-base that has been hit due to the scandalous one year in which three of the team’s top players were handed bans for involvement in spot-fixing.

Akhtar admitted that former captain Salman Butt and pacers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif - the trio banned by the ICC - would be missed.

"Obviously we are very hurt inside by whatever has happened to us. Pakistan need to win this World Cup at any cost. It will bring the charm back for people in Pakistan," said Akhtar.

"We are unfortunate that they are not there. But what can we do now? We have got to move on. I think whatever pace attack we have is good enough to win matches.

"We have the bowlers who can bowl at the death and we can restrict the sides. The main thing is that the ball is going to reverse swing as the match progresses. That is where I think Pakistan’s strength lies," he added.

The 35-year-old said despite his age, he can still bowl at 150/kph.

"I still bowl 150 kph (93 mph). Obviously when you are 26 and 36, it’s a bit different. I will try to do as well as I can with whatever ability I have. I am going to push my limits and give it all to the team."

Sreesanth Involved Altercation With Ricky Ponting

Temperamental India speedster S Sreesanth was involved in a brief altercation with Australian captain Ricky Ponting during the World Cup warm-up game on Sunday.

Sreesanth, who was drafted in the 15-member Indian squad due to non-recovery of Praveen Kumar from injury, exchanged words with Ponting twice during Australia’s run chase at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Ponting, who returned to competitive cricket for the first time after injuring his finger in the second Ashes Test last December, was beaten on quite a few occasions in the 10th over of the Australian innings bowled by Sreesanth.

A pumped up Sreesanth went up to Ponting to say a few words to which the Australian skipper responded verbally.

Next ball a loud shout for caught behind was turned down by the umpire and Sreesanth expressed his frustration with signs by his hands.

Sreesanth took one wicket at the expense of 21 runs from his five overs.

India Beat Australia On World Cup Warm-Up Match

Sticking to one’s strengths is the best possible policy. Both India and Australia put that theory into practice and each came away with results that would have left them satisfied. This though applies to the respective bowling strategies only, with the batting on either side, considered strong on paper, not really coming to the party during the World Cup warm-up game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday. For the record, albeit it doesn’t count, the result went India’s way, by as many as 38 runs in a low-scoring game.

Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson had brazenly announced his team’s game plan against the Indians on Saturday itself. He had stated that despite the World Cup being played in the sub-continent, the strategy would still be to test the Indians out with short-pitched stuff. And in front of a packed stadium, after Mahendra Singh Dhoni had won a rare toss and decided to bat, Johnson and Co. were true to their word. Hardly a ball landed in the batsman’s half and the Aussie pacers didn’t bother either that they were conceding many a wide with the ball sailing over the head.

This was all a bit too much for the Sachin Tendulkar-less side (the master and Zaheer Khan were left out, while the other 13 took part) who didn’t have a counter strategy and crumbled for a poor 214 inside the 45th over. That total in itself was owed to a restrained (by his standards) half-century from Virender Sehwag (54, 56b, 8x4, 1x6) and an even quieter 38-ball 32 from Yusuf Pathan, who had no fours in his innings but had two massive sixes to show.

The Australian reply was typically strong, Shane Watson and Tim Paine getting the side off the blocks quickly. The Indians for their part, reacted by turning to their spinners as early as the ninth over. With the fresh pitch surprisingly affording ample turn, the test was on for the Aussies, skipper Ricky Ponting in particular. Ponting (57, 85b, 4x4), who had stayed away from the slips when his side bowled to protect his finger, batted through the period with typical grit to at least ensure he got some useful time in the middle if not a winning start to the World Cup defense.

For the Indians, all the three spinners, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin and Piyush Chawla, who was even on a hat-trick once, were impressive as was skipper Dhoni, who had three stumpings to show for his first donning of the wicketkeeping gloves since the tour of South Africa.

Will all the pitches to be used in the tournament turn thus, will the ones in Bangalore at least do so, is the question now. If it does, it will certainly be advantage the hosts.

Sreesanth Named For Cricket World Cup 2011

S Sreesanth was on Tuesday named as replacement for the injured pacer Praveen Kumar in the Indian squad for the upcoming cricket World Cup.Praveen who sustained an elbow injury during the South Africa ODI series failed to recuperate in time and was ruled out after it became clear that he won`t be fit by the time India play their first match against Bangladesh on February 19.

"Praveen Kumar has been ruled out of the ICC CWC 2011 due to an elbow injury. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked S Sreesanth as Praveen Kumar’s replacement in the Indian team for the tournament", BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in a press release.

"The ICC has confirmed that Praveen Kumar can be replaced in the squad by Sreesanth," he added.Time was always running out for Praveen who was sent to London by the Indian Board to get his elbow injury checked by famous British surgeon Dr Andrew Wallace who had earlier treated Sachin Tendulkar for his tennis elbow problem.

However, yesterday when Praveen was put through the rigorous fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, it was clear that the Uttar Pradesh seamer was not at the peak of his fitness which is expected for a big tournament like the World Cup.

That Sreesanth will get the nod became clear as the pacer was also asked to appear for a fitness test in Bangalore yesterday as the board knew Praveen may not pass the test.

Sreesanth, who got a lucky break, has so far played 51 ODIs and has taken 75 wickets. However, it is his economy rate of 6.01 which has been a problem as he has a tendency to go wayward at times.

But the biggest positive about the temperamental pacer is his ability swing the ball at a brisk pace and produce impact deliveries like the one that got rid of an injured Jaques Kallis during the recent Durban Test match.

Sachin Tendulkar Will Be Making His Sixth World Cup Appearance

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has notched up many records during the five World Cups he has played spanning over two decades. Tendulkar will be making his sixth World Cup appearance, the most by any player, in the mega event beginning Feb 19.

In 36 matches, Tendulkar has amassed 1796 runs at an average of 57.93 and tops the list of leading run-scorers in the World Cup. He has four hundreds and 13 half-centuries.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who led his team to two successive World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007, is second in the list with 1537 runs in 39 matches (average 48.03). Former West Indies captain Brian Lara is third with 1225 runs at an average of 42.24.

Retired Australian opener Adam Gilchrist has the highest strike rate of 98.01 followed by former Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya (90.66) and Tendulkar (88.21).

Tendulkar also holds the distinction of scoring maximum runs in one World Cup, that came in the 2003 mega event in South Africa piling up 673 runs. India reached the final in that edition, but lost to Australia.

Matthew Hayden is second with 659 runs in the previous World Cup in West Indies.Tendulkar also occupies the fifth place in that list on account of his 523 runs in 1996 World Cup in the subcontinent.

Tendulkar is third in the list of most centuries cracked, sharing the space with Sourav Ganguly, Mark Waugh and Ponting, who all have four hundreds.

Ganguly, however, tops the list having scored four hundreds in 21 innings, Tendulkar is third (35 innings) after Waugh (22 innings).

Muttiah Muralitharan Will Now Coach The Aussie Players

Once jeered by Australian fans as a ‘chucker’, the wheel has turned full circle for Muttiah Muralitharan, as he will now coach the next generation of Aussie players in Cricket Australia’s bid to shore up the country’s spin bowling stock, according to a report.

The controversial Sri Lankan off-spinner will spend several weeks as a guest coach during an intensive training programme at the Brisbane Centre of Excellence in June.

Muralitharan, who has been repeatedly heckled and even had fruit thrown at him by unruly fans since being no-balled by umpire Darrell Hair in the 1995 Boxing Day Test, will become Australia’s potential spin saviour, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Test cricket’s greatest wicket-taker, the Sri Lankan will impart the secrets of his craft and videotape a coaching tutorial for future generations of Australian spinners.

Muralitharan’s action will be recorded live and downloaded on the Academy’s pro-batter video machine so that batsmen can face a “virtual Murali”.

Batting great Greg Chappell, who is the only full-time national selector, arranged the visit.“This is a wonderful opportunity ... Murali has probably forgotten more about spin bowling than most people will ever know in a lifetime,” Chappell said.

“Murali is one of the greatest spin bowlers of all time, we are very, very lucky. It is not just Murali’s obvious physical skill that will be a huge benefit for our young spinners.”

“It is also his mental toughness, his cleverness, his cunning and his ability to be able to set a batsman up and bowl 10-15 overs to a plan,” Chappell was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The depleted spin stocks are one of the most pressing issues facing Australian cricket, with 10 frontline spinners deployed at Test level since Shane Warne retired at the end of the 2006-07 home Ashes series.

Little-known spinners Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer wore the baggy green caps this summer after Nathan Hauritz was sacked before the first Ashes Test.

ICC Happy With The Progress Of Work At The Eden Gardens

International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Tuesday that the world body was happy with the progress of work at the Eden Gardens, but ruled out the possibility of Kolkata hosting the India-Ireland match.“We have received encouraging reports from Kolkata and we are confident that the Eden Gardens will host the remaining three matches,” said Lorgat.

The India-England match slated in Kolkata for Feb 27 was shifted to Bangalore due to unpreparedness of Eden Gardens. The stadium will now host its first World Cup match March 15 between South Africa and Ireland.

Asked if there is a possibility of Kolkata exchanging the India-Ireland match with Bangalore, which will now host two India matches, Lorgat said: “We have not received any request. But it will be difficult because of logistics. Practically I don’t think it is possible.”

On the shadow of match-fixing in the World Cup, Lorgat said ICC has “zero tolerance” towards corruption and has a strong system in place to check graft during the tournament.

“It’s an unfortunate reality but greed is not restricted to any particular city. We have measures in place to ensure that such things are snuffed out. We have zero tolerance towards corruption in sports. We have to bring the perpetrators to book,” he said.Lorgat also revealed that the ICC will be deploying its Anti-Corruption Security Unit (ACSU) officers to check any untoward incident.

“We have prepared well and will deploy more people. Yesterday and on Tuesday the whole staff of ACSU assembled and prepared a strategy. We can handle any situation. If needed, we will deploy additional officials,” he said.

He also reiterated that betting should be legalised in India.“If betting syndicates are legalised then it will be easy to regulate. When it is not regulated it will go underground. If betting is legalised then it will be far easier to manage the issue of temptation towards corruption. In countries like Australia, England, there is a regulatory industry,” he said.

Asked if not using the Hot Spot in the Umpires Decision Review System (UDRS) will be a setback for the ICC, Lorgat said: “I won’t call it a setback, because the other techniques available are good enough to run the Umpires’ Decision Review System which will definitely reduce the errors in decisions. We were aware of the fact that there were not enough Hot Spot cameras that could have been deployed for all matches.”

Eoin Morgan Will Missed The World Cup 2011

England`s World Cup preparations on Tuesday received a major setback after explosive batsman Eoin Morgan was ruled out of the event following a broken finger, forcing the ECB to name Ravi Bopara as his replacement.

Morgan missed the final one-day international of the recently concluded series against Australia after fracturing the middle finger of his left hand, a problem he first became aware of in the fourth one-day match.

"That`s a serious loss to us. He injured it in that Adelaide game and didn`t think it was serious. But it got worse the more he played and practised. The pain grew worse and therefore the medical team got on to it. He needs to be operated on," England coach Andy Flower was quoted as saying by `The Guardian`.

The Middlesex batsman was one of the most important members of the England`s World Cup squad and one who picked up injuries on the Australia tour. Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad, Paul Collingwood, Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett all suffered injuries of varying seriousness.

Flower said that his replacement Bopara, the Essex all-rounder who has been with the England Lions in the West Indies, will bring plenty to the squad.

"No one is irreplaceable. Ravi Bopara is a very talented and exciting player. He will also bring a bit of medium-pace bowling to help out. We`re confident the 15 players we`ve got out there will gel," said Flower.

Bopara`s last one-day international was against Pakistan at The Oval in September. He averages 28.50 from 54 matches.

3 Pakistan Players Will Face Spot-Fixing Scandal

The tainted Pakistan trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir will face a trial after they were charged with conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments by the UK prosecution service in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked world cricket last year.

The three cricketers, who have been suspended since September last by International Cricket Council, were today issued summons by Britain`s Crown Prosecution Service to a first hearing at City of Westminster Magistrates` Court on March 17.

Bookmaker Mazhar Majeed, who made the revelation in a `News of the World` sting operation that the three players took money to bowl deliberate no-balls during the Lord`s Test between Pakistan and England in August last year, was also charged with the same offences.

This comes after the three players and Majeed were interrogated by London Metropolitan Police. Majeed was arrested but later released. A third fast bowler, Wahab Riaz, was also interrogated.

"We have decided that Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif, Salman Butt and their agent, Mazhar Majeed, should be charged with conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments and also conspiracy to cheat," Simon Clements, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said.

"These charges relate to allegations that Majeed accepted money from a third party to arrange for the players to bowl `no balls` on 26 and 27 August 2010, during Pakistan`s fourth Test at Lord`s Cricket Ground in London.”

"I would remind everyone that these men are entitled to a fair trial and should be regarded as innocent of these charges unless it is proven otherwise in court. ICC tribunal is due to announce its decision tomorrow, but criminal proceedings are active now. It is extremely important that nothing should be reported which could prejudice the trial," he said.

The framing of the charges came just a day before an International Cricket Council tribunal announces its conclusions on the case in Doha tomorrow. The tribunal interrogated the players over 45 hours in Doha last month.

Clements said his organisation, which was responsible for prosecuting criminal cases investigated by British police, believed it had sufficient evident to convict the players and they could be subject to extradition proceedings if they do not return to Britain next month.

"Majeed has been summonsed to appear for a first hearing at City of Westminster Magistrates` Court on 17 March. Summonses for the same court date have been issued for the three players and they have been asked to return to this country voluntarily, as they agreed to do in September last year. Their extradition will be sought should they fail to return," Clements said.

"The Crown Prosecution Service has been working closely with the Metropolitan Police Service since the allegations of match-fixing became public on 29 August 2010. We received a full file of evidence on 7 December 2010 and we are satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute," he said.

The players have been suspended by ICC from all forms of cricket since September 3 after the British tabloid alleged they bowled no-balls at prearranged times during the fourth Test at Lord`s to fix spot-betting markets.

The trio was alleged to have obtained 150,000 pounds (USD 241,000) through Majeed who was believed to have accepted 50,000 pound to set up the deal.

Sourav Ganguly Will Not Be Part Of IPL-4

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will not be part of IPL-4 starting on April 8 and Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey cannot play the first four matches for his new franchise Sahara Pune Warriors for breaching player guidelines, the league`s Governing Council said on Friday.

IPL`s Governing Council stalled what could have been a back-door entry for Ganguly after he was left unsold at the players` auction in Bangalore at a base price of USD 400,000.

"Based on the views from Franchisees, IPL Governing Council decided not to make available the unsold Indian Players from the auction," said a release from Cricket Board`s secretary N Srinivasan who is a member of the GC as an office bearer of the Board.

That effectively dashed the hopes of not only Ganguly, who went unsold at the two-day auction on January 8 and 9, but also those of two other capped players - Wasim Jaffer and V R V Singh - who will not feature in the April 8-May 28 tournament.

Speaking to reporters after a marathon meeting of the Governing Council, chairman Chirayu Amin said Ganguly would not be part of IPL-4 following the objection raised by a few franchises to a request from one franchise which was interested in buying the Bengal stalwart outside the auction.

"We had received a request from one franchise (Kochi) that Ganguly should be allowed to be purchased outside the auction and rejected it after objections were raised by some other franchises," Amin said.

IPL rules state that no capped player can be bought outside the players` auction after he has been part of the process.

About the reason for cracking the whip and imposing the ban on Pandey, Srinivasan stated that based on the complaints from franchisees and after meeting with the player, the GC had imposed a four-match ban on the player.

"He cannot play the first four matches of IPL Season-4. As desired by him, he is permitted to play for the Pune Franchise," Srinivasan said in his release.

Amin told reporters that Pandey, through his agent, had haggled with several franchises.

"Pandey`s agent was negotiating with a number of franchises," was how Amin put it.

Pandey played for the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the first three seasons of IPL.

The IPL also saw no merit in the letter from Mumbai Indians franchise alleging complaints of irregularities in the conduct of January 8-9 players` auction and declared that the auction was held in a fair and transparent manner.

"As regards the letter from M/s. India Win Sports Private Limited (Mumbai Indians) regarding the recent IPL auction, the Governing Council was briefed by the operational team including IMG on all aspects of the letter. The procedure followed in this year`s auction is exactly the same as was done in all the previous IPL auctions," Srinivasan said.

"Representatives of all Franchisees had read the auction briefing note prepared by the IMG which included the changes referred to and signed the same in acceptance before the auction including the India Win Sports Private Limited (Mumbai Indians). The Governing Council reiterates that the auction was transparent and fair," he added.

Five new IPL Committees were also appointed in the meeting.

Code of Behaviour Committee: Shashank Manohar, Arun Jaitley, Chirayu Amin, Ravi Shastri, Ajay Shirke

Technical Committee: Chirayu Amin, Mohinder Amarnath, Ravi Shastri, M P Pandove, Sanjay Jagdale, Ranjib Biswal

Entertainment Committee: Chirayu Amin, Rajeev Shukla, Anurag Thakur, Ranjib Biswal

Therapeutic Usage Exemption (TUE) Committee: Independent physicians arranged through IDTM

Suspect Bowling Action Committee: S Venkatraghavan, A V Jayaprakash, Javagal Srinath, Mohinder Amarnath

Prior to the meeting of the GC, four Indian players, led by senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar, met BCCI president Shashank Manohar apparently to discuss the ambush-marketing clause sent to them by the International Cricket Council.

The other three players who met the Board chief were Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Ashish Nehra.

The ICC has toughened its stand on players indulging knowingly or unknowingly in ambush marketing, by threatening to throw them out of the World Cup starting in Dhaka on February 19.

"Any squad member that knowingly or unknowingly breaches the squad terms may face sanctions ranging from financial penalties through to being excluded from continued participation in the event," ICC`s legal head David Becker said in a memo to all international players and cricket boards regarding guidelines for endorsements and commercials around the World Cup.

Interestingly, the memo went out on October 26 last year, but the Indian players seem to have just woken up to this threat.

An IPL franchise source told reporters that the meeting was sought by the players because the restrictions imposed by ICC on brand endorsements would begin seven days prior to the start of the World Cup and end only when a team goes out.

"At all times squad members may not allow their name, likeness or image to be used by any third party in any advertising or endorsement (or for any commercial purpose) in such a way that gives rise to a direct or implied association with the event (the World Cup)," said Becker in his memo.

4 Top Indian Players Pay Cut For IPL

Annoyed by the 20 percent pay cut rule laid down by the Indian Premier League, four top Indian players- Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Ashish Nehra- met BCCI president Shashank Manohar on Friday and asked him to look into the matter.

Though the outcome of the meeting is still not known, sources close to BCCI revealed that the four players have conveyed their reservations about the new rule in which a cricketer, who takes part in IPL IV, will see his pay cut by 20 per cent if his team does not finish in the top three of the cash-rich league.

However, the clause does not apply to the Indian uncapped players who have a fixed salary. It was also learnt that all the players of the ten IPL teams were shocked to read the new clause and decided to convey their reservations about this to the BCCI.

As per new rule, Gautam Gambhir, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping 11.04 crore, will get only 8.83 crore if his team fails to make it to the top three in IPL IV.

Sreesanth Sang Two Songs Written By Him

Indian speedster S Sreesanth showcased his S-36 band in Kerala in which he sang two songs written by him, including one for the Indian World cup squad.

The curtain raiser show of his S-36 band (S for Sreesanth and 36 is his lucky jersey number) was held at the Jt Performing centre here last night.

Sreesanth sang two songs written -- `Hello` a Hindi number with a message for the India world cup team `Sheera Benkae Tu Jung say lad lae` (Fight the battle like a Tiger) and a Love song in Tamil `Anbulla Azhake`...

He also sang and danced to a song from Hindi film`Kaminae`.

The cricketer anchored, sang and performed for the audience who were only too happy to see their famous crickter in a new avatar, Sree santh`s borther-n-law and Playback singer Madhu Balakrishnan and Deepak warrier, both band members said.

This was the first curtain raiser performance held by the band in the country and similar performances would be held in other cities as well.

Madhu Balakrushan sang few malayalam songs and keerthanams.

Kamran Ahamed, who sang `Lambi Judai` in Emran Hashmi starrer `Jannat` is likely to peform with the band in other cities.

DRS And Super Over Would Make Their World Cup Debut

The much-debated Decision Review System (DRS) and the Super Over, used in case of tie matches in knockout stages, would make their World Cup debut in the upcoming extravaganza which unfolds in the sub-continent on February 19.

As per the playing conditions for cricket`s showpiece set out by the International Cricket Council, DRS will be used in all matches.

DRS, which has been used in Test matches selectively when the two competing teams` Boards have agreed to its implementation, has been consistently opposed by the Indian board.

Sri Lanka`s former World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga today came out wholeheartedly in its support at a function here.

"If ICC has the technology, they might as well use it and give the benefit to the players. It is a World Cup and one decision can change the game," said Ranatunga.

DRS, which has been used in some bilateral Test series while ignored for others due to lack of agreement between the concerned boards, would be making its entry for the first time in ODI cricket.

"Each team is allowed to make two unsuccessful Player Review requests per innings. If a Player Review results in the umpire reversing his original decision, then the request has been successful and does not count towards the innings limit. If the umpire`s decision is unchanged, the Player Review is unsuccessful," the playing conditions state.

"After two unsuccessful requests by one team, no further Player Review requests will be allowed by that team during the current innings," say the playing conditions for the tournament about DRS.

"If following a Player Review, an umpire upholds a decision of `Out`, but for a different mode of dismissal from that for which the original decision was given, then the request will still be regarded as unsuccessful.”

"If following a Player Review, an umpire upholds a decision of `Not Out` on account of the delivery being a no ball for any reason, thereby not requiring any review of the ball`s subsequent trajectory, then this will not be counted as an unsuccessful request and not count towards the innings limit."

The TV umpires have also been given a guide about balls pitching within the stumps for interpreting the laws on leg before wicket if called to use DRS.

"When using technology to determine where the ball pitched (as per Law 36.1(b)), the third umpire should refer to the `point` (or centre) of the ball. Therefore if at least 50 percent of the ball pitches outside the line of leg stump, then no LBW dismissal is possible.

"When using a replay to determine the moment at which the wicket has been put down (as per Law 28.1), the third umpire should deem this to be the first frame in which one of the
bails is shown (or can be deduced) to have lost all contact with the top of the stumps and subsequent frames show the bail permanently removed from the top of the stumps."

Law 36 deals with LBW decisions and the relevant subsection is about the ball pitching in line with wicket and wicket or on the off side of the striker`s wicket.

Sachin Tendulkar Gears Up To Play His Last World Cup

As Sachin Tendulkar gears up to play probably his last World Cup, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Indian cricket team is desparate to make it a special one for him by gifting the champion batsman the trophy which has eluded the side for 28 years.

In his two-decade long illustrious career, during which he has featured in five World Cups since 1992, Tendulkar has virtually every batting record under his belt but a world title is the only trophy which is missing from his cupboard.

And Dhoni said his team will do whatever it takes to make it a memorable tournament for Tendulkar, who is approaching 38.

"We all love him (Tendulkar) a lot. Most probably it is his last World Cup although we all want him to play many more World Cups. But practically speaking it seems impossible," Dhoni told reporters during a promotional event here.

"So, that (the World Cup trophy) can be the biggest gift from the team to him," he said.

"We believe in each others` talent and we have a very good team. The environment in the dressing room is very good. And if we perform to our potential we have a very good chance of winning (the World Cup)," Dhoni added.

Dhoni termed the 2007 inaugural World Twenty20 title in South Africa as the biggest achivement of his captaincy career so far, but refused to make any predictions for the upcoming mega-event.

"It (World Twenty20 title) is the most memorable moment of my career since I made my debut in 2004 and it will always be there up in the league.”

"But I don`t want to make any predictions for the (ODI) World Cup. I can only assure all that we will give our best. We play one game at a time. So at present I am just thinking about the Bangladesh game (on February 19 in Dhaka)," he said.

Dhoni also hailed the format of this year`s World Cup and said it is a welcome change from the 2007 edition.

In this year`s World Cup, 14 teams are divided into two groups of seven from where top four from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals unlike the 2007 edition, where 16 teams first competed in a pool stage, then a "super 8" stage, followed by semi-finals and a final.

"It is a good format for us. It is a bit of relief from 2007. Here even if you lose a few games you have a chance to get into the quarter-finals," Dhoni said.

"But it will be about playing consistent cricket. Whoever plays consistent cricket in the tournament will get into the knockout stage," he added.

Four years ago in the West Indies, weighed down by the pressure of expectations, India crashed out of the World Cup at the preliminary stage but Dhoni insisted that the present
outfit is well prepared to handle the burden in the upcoming event.

"Now we call pressure added responsibility. We know the expectation level is high but we are prepared for it because we knew for long that the World Cup will be held in India. Expectations is something which is beyond our control," Dhoni said.

The Indian skipper was also satisfied with the 15 players he has got for the tournament.

"I am really happy with the squad. I know I am the lone wicket-keeper in the team but it is not a worrying factor. If anything major happens to me, we can always bring in the reserve wicket-keeper as it is happening in India. But one wicket-keeper gives us the liberty of having one more variation in the side," Dhoni said.

"We also have variety in our bowling department. We have not got express fast bowlers but we have got decent bowlers who are very skillful," he said.

Dhoni differed with England batsman Kevin Pietersen, who criticised the scheduling of the World Cup for having long gaps between matches.

"It is difficult to get a perfect schedule but I am quite happy with the schedule. Some of our players have got a few niggles and the gap will help them to recover," Dhoni said.

With the controversial Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) to be implemented in the tournament from the last eight round, the Indian captain said the teams will have to do their homework on the subject.

"We have done our background check although we have not used it (UDRS). It`s not that every team will be pleased with the system at the end of the day but we need to do our
homework right," Dhoni said.

Dhoni also expressed his disappointment at not playing at the Eden Gardens where the hosts were scheduled to take on England on February 27. The fixture has been shifted to
Bangalore because of Eden`s unpreparedness.

"Playing in the Eden Gardens before one lakh people is always special. We will miss the passionate Kolkata crowd but it is out of our control," he said.

Michael Clarke And Shane Watson Not In Last ODI

Australia captain Michael Clarke and all-rounder Shane Watson will miss the final one-day match against England in Perth on Sunday to get some rest before the World Cup, Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

Australia have already won the seven-match series against England and hold a 5-1 lead after their two wicket win in the sixth game in Sydney on Wednesday. All-rounder Steve Smith will also miss the match after he sustained a hip injury in Sydney.

Adam Voges, another all-rounder, and offspinner Jason Krezja would join the Australia team in Perth for the match and series vice captain Cameron White would lead the side in Clarke`s absence, chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said.

Smith, who bowls legspin, joins left arm spinner Xavier Doherty (back) and Nathan Hauritz (dislocated shoulder) as the third slow bowler injured during the series against England. Hauritz and Smith were named in Australia`s World Cup squad.

Australia`s regular captain Ricky Ponting is still recovering from surgery on a broken finger but has begun batting in the nets.

Batsman Mike Hussey is also recovering from surgery on a hamstring injury, while his replacement for the England series Shaun Marsh also suffered a hamstring problem.
